What is trauma-aware astrology?

Early on, I recognized the power of astrology for influencing how a person behaves and thinks and feels about themselves, others, and the world. It certainly did for me. As a trauma and domestic abuse survivor myself, I know that this power comes with great responsibility.

Approximately 2/3 of Canadians will be exposed to at least one traumatic event in their lifetime and 8% meet the criteria for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (Statistics Canada, 2022). This data doesn't include people living in Indigenous settlements or reserves, people who are institutionalized, or children. This means I'm BOUND to work or connect with someone affected by trauma.

Here are 5 essential components of trauma-aware astrology:

1. Trauma Awareness

It's important to have knowledge about trauma and how it impacts a person's life from a physical, psychological, social and spiritual level while also considering the historical, cultural, and systemic context. This plays a role in how a person may experience and interpret astrological symbols and transits. It may even show up in a session, so being sensitive and recognizing the signs is essential.

2. Safety & trust

Establishing a welcoming and non-judgmental environment in which informed consent is emphasized in addition to being clear, patient, reliable, and predictable in my approach supports the establishment of safety and trust. Explaining the purpose and structure of our work together, and making sure my client understands and feels comfortable is also key.

3. CHOICE, COLLABORATION, & CONNECTION

This involves empowering the client, recognizing power dynamics, and emphasizing choice amidst astrological conditions.

A trauma-aware astrology reading is a co-creative experience. You are fully involved in the interpretation of your birth chart. It comes to life with your unique insight and life experience. This means you are free to express your feelings and opinions without judgment.

4. EMPOWERING, HARNESSING STRENGTHS, & DEVELOPING SKILLS

We shift our perspective of problems to possible solutions and opportunities for growth while honouring your innate strengths as the expert of your life. As needed, we incorporate skills training to help you to develop compassion, confidence, resilience, and a sense of self-mastery. This might look like mindfulness, somatic embodiment, communication, mindset, relationship skills, and more!

5. Astrologer Self-Awareness & Humility

As your astrologer, I must be aware of what I'm bringing to the table. This includes my biases, experiences, beliefs, worldviews, and internal responses to what you're bringing. How I interpret your birth chart is filtered through my unique lens. So I must be humble and recognize that my interpretations may not be accurate. I might be able to read astrological symbols, but you are ultimately the expert. That's why collaboration is so important.

I’d love to see the profession of astrology, and all helping professions in that manner, offer trauma-aware and ethical care across the board.

I hope this was helpful to you!

Curious about how we can work together?

Wild love,

Alex
